hmm, still not clear what's going on. more questions ;-)

1. can you post your grsecurity config (meaning the kernel's
   .config and any sysctl's if you're using them) and the entire
   strace (if they're too big, just put them on the web or send
   in private mail to spender and me). if you're using RBAC then
   we'll need the policy related to init/shutdown as well.

2. what does lsof say on the hanging process?

3. could you attach with gdb to the hanging process and get at
   least a stack backtrace ('bt' in gdb, and you'll get best
   results if the binaries are not stripped)?

4. what is the sysvinit version you're using?
