This is caused by another process having your terminal open, allowing
it to potentially steal keystrokes.  The culprit should be reported
in your dmesg ("terminal being sniffed by...") or can be found via lsof.
In the past there have been problems with init scripts passing on terminal
file descriptors to started services:
